We never realize the love of our parents until we become parents ourselves. Every year millions of adults begin the long, arduous and sometimes scary yet always rewarding path to parenthood. Parenting involves a certain amount of good judgment. Good parenting fosters empathy, self-reliance, self-control, respect, and cheerfulness. It also promotes intellectual curiosity, motivation, and a desire to excel in life.
Although it is true that there is no single definition of good parenting, there are certain guidelines that go a long way in ensuring the happiness of your child. Here we provide five such guidelines on raising a brighter and happier child.

1. Read Aloud to Your Child
Reading aloud to your child helps in their mental development. You should read aloud to your child every day. Let your child see and touch the book and play with the voices and sounds of the words. Reading aloud helps your child develop early language skills and builds word-sound awareness that is a potent predictor of reading success. It also builds curiosity, motivation, and memory. This will help a lot when your little bundle of joy starts his or her formal education.

2. Make a Variety of Books Avaialble for Your Child
Another important parenting tip for raising a smart and happy child is to make a rich variety of books available for your little munchkins. This will encourage your child to develop a positive association with books and reading enabling him or her to excel in school later on.

3. Be a Literary Role Model
One of the best ways to instill strong reading habits in your child is to let your child see you reading books for pleasure. Children learn the most through their elders. You can be a role model for your child by displaying reading habits to them from an early age. This will build a strong foundation for success when they begin reading at Happy Days International Preschool.

4. Take Your Child Grocery Shopping
Grocery shopping can be a great learning experience for your child. It will present an opportunity for your child to improve his or her vocabulary. Making a grocery-shopping list with them will help in introducing new words to them. When you visit the grocery store, you can assist your child to search for items in the shopping list. This will help him/her to relate words with pictures. Linking words in this way provides a holistic way of transferring information to children.

5. Provide Lots of Writing Materials
Writing allows your child to develop creativity and thought processing skills. It is important that you nurture their writing skills by providing them with lots of writing materials – markers, chalks, crayons, and pencils. You should encourage your child to draw and write his or her name. In addition, you should also encourage your child to write a thank you letter or a birthday card for relatives. This will not only help your children to improve their vocabulary, but also teach them to be appreciative towards others.
